How to Look Natural in Front of the Camera (Even If You’re Camera Shy)

Feeling a little awkward in front of the camera? You’re not alone. At Jess Jane Studios, many of our Tampa Bay clients tell us they’re not “picture people” or that they always feel stiff and unsure of what to do with their hands. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to be a model to look amazing in your photos. You just need the right guidance, the right vibe, and a photographer who knows how to make you feel like yourself.

Whether it’s for your wedding, engagement session, or family portraits, we’ve got your back. Here’s how we help you look and feel natural on camera—no matter how shy you think you are.

1. Get Comfortable with Us First

Building trust is step one. We always start with a quick conversation or meeting before the session—whether that’s over coffee, FaceTime, or a few texts back and forth. Getting to know each other helps shake off the nerves and makes the experience feel less like a photoshoot and more like hanging out with friends who happen to have cameras.

2. Forget Posing—We Focus on Movement

Instead of stiff poses, we gently guide you into natural movements and interactions. We might have you walk hand-in-hand, whisper something silly, or just talk to each other. These candid moments lead to photos that feel genuine—because they are. And in the Florida sunshine or golden hour glow? Chef’s kiss.

3. Laugh, Be Goofy, Be You

Some of the best photos happen in the in-between moments—the giggles, the glances, the goofy inside jokes. We encourage those! We want to capture the real stuff, the connection that makes your relationship yours.

4. We’ll Give You Plenty of Direction (Without Being Bossy)

Not sure what to do with your hands? We’ll help with that. Need help standing in a flattering way? We’ve got tricks for that too. You won’t be left guessing. We give subtle, encouraging direction to help you feel confident and comfortable from start to finish.

5. Choose a Location That Feels Right

We love shooting all over Tampa Bay—beaches, parks, downtown alleys, you name it. But the best location is the one where you feel at ease. Don’t want to shoot in a busy place? No problem. Prefer the beach at sunrise when no one’s around? Let’s go. Your comfort comes first.

6. Wear Something That Feels Like You

You don’t have to go over-the-top or match Pinterest-perfect outfits. Choose clothing you feel good in—something that moves with you and reflects your style. Feeling confident in what you’re wearing is a huge step toward relaxing in front of the camera.

7. Trust the Process (and the Photographer)

You might feel awkward during a few moments of your session—that’s totally normal. But trust us: what feels weird doesn’t look weird. We know our angles, lighting, and timing. We’re here to help you shine and we’ll never leave you hanging.
